Welcome to Doth Grin, a web site that has been in existence since 1997, with former students (who are known as minions or Mr. Tyler’s Army) now taking on their own classrooms and forming the first full generation of teachers. At least 30 of my former students are now teaching, while several others have gone on to my other career, journalism.
This web site is taking a significant change from its 13 years of functioning as a site for students. As I finish my Master’s in education and have watched the public schools take a brutal hit from the recession and problems related to No Child Left Behind, I have decided to dedicate this site to educational issues .
My background:
After graduating from New Mexico State in 1987, I was a police and city reporter for the Albuquerque Tribune until August of 1991, when I moved into teaching. However, I maintained my journalistic background by writing free lance for four years for the Albuquerque Tribune as an education columnist and four years with the Albuquerque Journal as a prep sports writer.
After moving to the greater Phoenix area, myself and colleague Devon Adams helped start the AP program at Basha High School. Two years later, I served as an assistant principal, English and history instructor at a charter school before coming to Gilbert High School in 2007. During that time, I wrote for the East Valley Tribune as a prep and junior college free lance writer until December of 2008.
I am happily married with three grown daughters and one granddaughter…the youngest a free lance photographer.
